IG: ESCAROLE 🥬 do you eat it? I just harvested 5 massive heads of it. It’s my first year growing it and truth be told I’ve never actually cooked with it. I’ve seen recipes for simple sautéed escarole which I might try, but would love to hear YOUR suggestions on how to prepare this gorgeous bitter green

IG: Happiest of birthdays to this sweet dude today🥰! Also, to my amazing late father who Jeff never met, but would have loved. Isn’t it interesting that they have the same birthday? June 12th has certainly been an important date in the outcome of my life ❤️ Love you #🥳

IG: Went to the community garden plot today to give it a watering and do some weeding since it’s been maybe a week since I tended to it… Ended up with a huge haul of spinach and green onion! 🙌🏼 Can I be honest? This is the first time I’ve actually grown thriving spinach😅. The secret— I planted the seeds and then did absolutely nothing 🤷🏻‍♀️LOL In the past I’ve transplanted the seedlings and they all just suck… direct sowing from now on, peeps! Also I planted it between my rows of onions, carrots and potatoes to optimize space (because spinach has rather shallow root systems and likes some shade, this works well). Everyone in the garden is happy, including me, cuz imma eat this tonight

IG: Harvesting some ‘green salad bowl’ leaf lettuce for tonight’s dinner. This will also make room for new growth as I like to optimize space in my beds (aka plant close together!). 🥬🥬🥬 Update: it was damn delicious. So tender and buttery— I love this variety from @uharvest seeds

IG: So I’m sure you’ve heard about therapy dogs, but what about therapy chickens? 🐓🐓🐓 Today I’m thinking a lot about 2 summers ago when I lived in midtown Toronto and rented 4 chickens on a whim. My mom had died about a month earlier and I was grieving. I had always wanted chickens, and when I heard that there was a company who rented them, I jumped right in. I suppose the veil of grief made me a little less law-abiding than usual, since housing chickens in Toronto was then illegal. But it felt like the right thing to do, and exactly what I needed to. I took that whole summer off of work and I grieved, gardened up a friggen’ storm, and spent almost every day hanging out in the backyard with the chickens— GretcHEN, LilliHEN, Ethel and DeHENise (sidenote: DeHENise was unknowingly ill when she came to us and passed away after about a month, despite my best efforts. After that I stuck with just the 3 girls). 🐓 Looking back now, they were 100% my therapy chickens. I guess the point of this story is that we all should do what we need to do to grieve and get through hard times, even if it’s weird or unconventional. I rented chickens for 6 months, it was the best decision I could have made for my healing, and I am SO grateful for that. On another note—CHICKENS ARE AWESOME! Really missing these amazing girls (especially GretcHEN, my fave) and wanting a permanent flock 📷2nd photo cred: @torontogardener

IG: Organic potato game strongggggg in my community garden plot!!! 🌱 I’ve been MIA because I’ve been building gardens and planting up a STORM (plus raising a very energetic puppy, @truffletheblacklab 🤷🏻‍♀️). This year I’m growing food in 2 community beds (one personal, one foodbank) as well as **10** of my own raised beds at home. And I am still short for space… of course 😅 BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH. 🌱 Are you growing anything this year?

IG: The best kinda medicine? FOOD! 🙌🏼 🥘 Woke up with a gnarly sore throat this morning 😷 so it’s time to crank my body full of the good stuff. Started off with @organogold reishi spores and reishi King coffee, a hefty dose of vitamin D, colloidal silver, and then, OF COURSE some medicinal healing chicken soup. I puréed some big chunks of fresh organic ginger, turmeric and garlic and then gently simmered it in homemade chicken bone broth. I added a can of organic coconut milk, carrots, celery, local ramps and green onion. I topped it off with last night’s dinner leftover cauliflower and chopped up chicken. I seasoned to taste with Himalayan salt and fresh ground pepper. Finally, I added a massive handful of organic bean sprouts 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 Soooooo nourishing and tasty and comforting, plus hella immune boosting and anti-inflammatory😊

IG: Ok I filled my personal 4×10’ community garden plot… now we water, weed and wait! I am growing everything from seed cuz I’m ambitious like that (except the potatoes which I bought to eat but then let them grow eyes with the intention of planting, cuz they were delicious)🌱 I still need to fill the twin sister plot next to this guy (see cardboard? I’m keeping out the weeds) whose harvest will be donated to the food bank 👌🏼, but I am assigned what goes in there for organizational purposes, so I’m waiting on that assignment. I also have 10 bazillion seedlings at home that need to be planted, but my poor garden-building man is SO busy this week. I will keep potting them up in bigger homes and practicing patience, the growing season is still somewhat young❤️
